Here’s a quick conversion tip:
Your homepage should feature a broad range of the product types you sell. A glance over the homepage should indicate your site's product diversity.
Why? Because in tests, first-time visitors rely heavily on glancing over your homepage to understand what type of site you are and what you sell.
Therefore, if you only show a narrow range of product types, visitors likely think you don't sell what they are looking for and leave for another site.
Showing a wide range of product types is even more important on mobile, where users can't determine what you sell by looking at the main menu - assuming you have product categories in the top-level menu. If you don’t have product categories in your top-level navigation, read why you should here.
It’s okay that important (popular) product types use more screen real estate. As long as it doesn't limit the range of product types shown on your homepage. At least not if you want to be perceived as selling other product types as well.
The safe way to do this is to visually show your main product categories using images like, e.g., Apple's homepage.
However, you can feature product types using both specific products and categories. Both options help the visitor determine the range of what you sell.
Just don't be like Zappos. They sell shoes, clothing, bags, jewelry, etc. But their homepage more or less only shows shoes.
If you have a narrow catalog, you can show individual products instead of categories. Aim for min. 1 product of each type you sell.
It's difficult with a large catalog as you'll run out of screen real estate before you've shown a wide range of product types.
Godspeed,Mathias
