How to make your site faster
Here's how you determine exactly what slows down your page.
If you have eyes and a Twitter account, you've probably seen someone talk about page speed recently.
Maybe you've heard that a 100-millisecond delay in website load time can hurt your conversion rate by 7%.
Or that a two-second delay will increase your bounce rate by 103%.
And maybe even that your mobile visitors will leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load.
So, naturally, you want to improve your site speed. But how do you know where to begin?
It's actually pretty easy.
Open Chrome -> Right-click, Inspect -> “Network” tab -> Disable cache -> Select “All” -> Load your site -> Sort by time.
You'll end up with a list like the above that tells you exactly how long it takes to load different parts of your site—everything from images to javascript and CSS. For example, Microsoft Clarity takes 112 ms to load. Not too bad, but it all adds up.
Images are the easiest to fix. So start there. But also consider whether you really need all the scripts that are most likely running on your site from Shopify apps and third-party tools.
I urge you to open your site and check for yourself right now. There's money on the line!
Godspeed,
Mathias
